The Human Immune System: An Introduction to Optometrists (84525-SD | 129340)

After discussion of the basic structure of the human immune system, the course presents natural immunity and vaccines. The course will explain various aspects of these important components of the immune system. The course will also examine patients with allergies and explain the immunological cause.

At the completion of this course the attendee should be able to:

  1. Know the definition of the term antigen and how it is used (and misued) in medical discussions. They will also understand self-antigens and how the immune system develops tolerance to self-antigens.
  2. Understand the purpose of cytokines and their importance in the immune response
  3. Recognize the two divisions of the human immune system and how they interact
  4. Understand the immune system components involved in natural immunity.
  5. Recognize the immunological principles involved with vaccination
  6. Understand the causes and mechanisms causing allergies which commonly present to Optometrist
